Question:
Can I eat fruits without peeling? Are all types of fats bad?

Will I be able to eat a whole apple, pear, peach, plum, etc.? And about the fats...can I stir fry in canola oil for example? I know to stay away from deep fried foods and stuff like chips, but where is the line drawn? Should I not use vegetable oil, Crisco, or butter at all in anything?    — Mary M. I am 8 months post-op and can now eat most fruits with no peeling, but in the beginning I had to peel the fruit. My tummy just didn't digest it well. Fruits do make me very full, and even now I cannot finish a whole large sized apple. Just take it slow, and experiment with new foods a little at a time.

Hi, Mary! My doctor told me that veggie oils, margerine, and crisco are all terrible. I thnk it's got to do with the way it's all processed. I only use extra virgin olive oil, and real butter.(in small amounts) If your not real sure, I suggest that you call your doctors office and ask. I think this is a pretty important issue, considering that you will need to cook! It's not something you should play by ear, something like this could really effect your loss. Good Luck!!

This last 2 years' apples have been lousy. Normally, I could eat the peels, but these are more like leather! I do eat the ones on pears, but not peaches. As time goes on, you learn to "test" what has broken down well by sort of spreading it across the roof your mouth. If it's still one solid piece (not many) after chewing, don't swallow. I avoid Fat Free products, as I malabsorb the fats 'n oils (to a large degree), but will absorb every speck of extra sugar. The FF products are higher in sugar. I do use canola for cooking and rarely eat fried foods, as they don't taste good, but actually, I find I must introduce some fats 'n oils, since I literally get none via foods. However, I will never need to introduce sugar. I've met it and it has my number. Sigh.

Hi Mary: I had RNY surgery 9 months ago. I do not "fry" anything - but I will "oven fry" chicken, if you know what that means. I use canola, peanut, and olive oils in small amounts, I also stir fry and use sesame oil (great flavor). Apple skins are kinda scary to me cause they are difficult to chew well enough so that I don't swallow anything too big (nothing the size of an m&m or larger will go from my pouch to my intestine so I have to chew, chew, chew! I would be careful with grapes too, but as long as you consciously watch yourself and your chewing before you swallow, you should do fine with fruits and veggies.
