Question:
Has anyone been denied coverage because of weight?
Two days ago I received a letter from State Farm, along with a refund of the premium that I'd paid, explaining that my application for coverage was denied. Reason - height and weight (5'3" 310#). Has this happened to anyone and do you have any advice. I already feel so discouraged. I don't want this to keep happening to me, because I might need my strength to fight denial for surgery. — dandjon (posted on December 8, 1999)

Donna - this happens all the time. When the underwriters at the insurance
company see the weight, applications are automatically rejected. I am
insured thru my husband's employer but we have to pay a higher rate because
of my weight. I have read that there are some states that are helping
people with insurance problems - I would definitely check into that. Start
by contacting your Insurance Commissioner or Dept. of Insurance or even
your state representative. Good luck and don't give up.
