Question:
Has anyone with insurance through Microsoft had their surgery approved?
Microsoft is essentially self-insured, but has Aetna PPO administer their plan. Although I can find several examples of Aetna PPO paying for this surgery, Microsoft's benefit dept. is adamant that ALL treatments of obesity, including surgery (despite several co-morbid conditions) are specifically EXCLUDED. They have sent along the verbage that supports their claim. I am heartbroken and want to fight, but my husband is afraid to take legal action against the software giant because it might somehow affect his job. I've been in tears all day...any and all support is greatly appreciated! — Laura S. (posted on July 15, 1999)

I hate to say this .. but it sounds like Microsoft treats their employees
like they treat their clientelle. However, Tell them to show you the
policy and point out precisely where the exclusion is. If you have a copy
of the policy look in the exclusions section, most policies are now written
in "laymans" terms so the average person has a clue what they say
rather than using insurance terms. If the surgery is excluded it will say
just about exactly what the benefits department said. If there is no
specific exclusion, because of the nature of insurance, No Exclusion means
it's INCLUDED and therefore covered!!! In Insurance, something does not
have to be specifically mentioned to be covered, BUT, it HAS to be
specifically EXCLUDED to be declined. SO! Go For it BABY!!!!!
