Question:
My incision is finally healed but, now it is hard and sore at the bottom, why?
Hi all! I have finally healed after 5 months of drainage from my incision. My question is it is getting kinda hard and swollen around the area that has just healed up over the past two weeks. Why? Has anyone experienced this? It is a little sore too. Thanks! — wildchild (posted on September 20, 2003)

I am not 100% positive, but I believe this is just scar tissue and that
with time the soreness and swelling will also go away. Not to offend, but
whenever I have had surgery on a pet they do the same thing and eventually
you would never know they had the surgery. My open RNY will be my first
time of truly being cut open. I have had two tubal ligations with very
tiny openings so nothing to complain about there and my hysterectomy was
vaginal so no surface incision to worry about. Just keep an eye on the area
for any sign of infection, but I would pretty much leave it alone.

See how it goes but it could be that the incision wasn't quite ready to
heal up and still has some fluid below it. I know, not what you wanted to
hear. However, it is very possible for it to be scar tissue that will
soften over time. I had a part of my incision open for 4-1/2 months. It
finally closed after a 2nd surgery which left a 1-1/2" diameter hole
all the way down to my facia. That hole ended up closing up kind of
puckered and for a while it hurt because there was some stranding with the
puckering. It is much better, flattened out some and is not tight and does
not hurt anymore. I did use lotion on it but can't say it did much. The
rest of my incision is flat and soft and smooth. Keep an eye on it!
