Question:
Has anyone else lost this slowly?

I'm 4 months out, and feel like I can't lose weight. I've lost about 41 pounds, most in the first two months. The last five weeks, I've lost only about 1-2 pounds. I haven't lost any inches in at least 4 weeks.
I'm 5'4" and started at 226 (a "lightweight," I know). I have an active life style with lots of stairs and lots of lifting, but don't do additional exercise. I eat about 900 to 1200 calories a day; lately my appetite has gotten bigger. Mostly I eat protein-- lots of beef jerky, not much else.
I'm feeling really good about where I am and much healthier. However, I'm only 4 months along and losing weight is like pulling teeth. Shouldn't I be losing at least 1 pound a week? I feel like a failure even after WLS. — Beth S. (posted on May 23, 2003)

Beth: I know just how you feel. My surgery was 11-25-03, I'm 5'3" and started at 229 lbs. I've lost about 60 lbs so far, averaging about 1 lb a week for the last few months. It's still coming off though, and my skin has retained some of the elasticity which is so important. I have noticed the weeks I'm able to get in more walking, I see better results; also when I'm able to increase my water intake. Hang in there, it will work. For some of us, it just takes a little longer. Kim

Sweetie, I'd say that you will need to up your activity level. Your calorie counts sounds OK, and if you are concentrating on protein, and limit the carbs then it's got the right stuff to process. Try to do one hour of cardio three times per week..your body needs you to challenge it and get the benefit from that metabolism boost. Also, you want to make sure you are getting in enough water. Finally I'd tell you that I see a difference in my loss week to week when I make sure to get in a couple of protein shakes each day...for a couple of hundred calories, it helps with hunger and give me extra nutrition. But I started out ALOT bigger than you and am bypassed more than you for sure. Good luck!

Hi I got your entry from the WLS library, searching for answers too. My problem is just like yours. I started to 230-235# I am 64" too. I go to Bally's 4-5 x/wk I am on my feet alot with my job. I weigh 203#, 3 mo postop. Sometimes I only lose 1#/wk sometimes not even that. I know your entry is old. So I was wondering what happened, did it work out ok for you in the end. Do you get to your goal. I have an appetite too, get strong hunger pangs before meals and try to avoid starch carbs please let me know, I need some hope too. Donna
