Question:
Everything I'm eating suddenly is making me sick --or I'm sick of it!
I had RNY nearly 7 weeks ago, and I'm on pureed/soft foods for one more week. Suddenly there seems to be no protein source (except shakes) that I can eat. They all seem to give me a severe reaction of some sort, except for chili w/o beans, and I'm getting sick of that. Cheese causes constipation, peanut butter causes sugar dumping, and everything else swells in my pouch and then I have pain (feels like it is coming from my stoma) for the next half hour. I've had this reaction to salmon, liverwurst, lean ham, eggs and chicken. I'm tempted to stick to fruit and vegetables and get my protein from my shakes (and to drink an extra shake each day). <br> I'll be seeing my surgeon Wednesday and mentioning this to him. Meanwhile, is this a solution others have chosen? What do your surgeons say? — Beth S. (posted on March 3, 2003)

I'm sorry you can't tolerate anything. It will eventually get better,
though. Your stomach is jsut adjusting right now, so it may be hard for a
little bit. You have pretty much exhausted most forms of protein, huh!? My
surgeon said that in the beginning stages, it actually is okay to just
drink protein shakes and eat some fruits and veggies. So I think this is
okay, but eventually you will need to eat more substance. Have you tried
any form of nuts or beans? You said you tried salmon, what about a white,
more milder fish like flounder or sole? Maybe tunafish? Also, how about
soups? Don't have a ton of protein, but maybe cream of broccoli or clam
chowder or even chicken noodle (I know you said you can't handle chicken,
but maybe in different forms- or eat the veggie and noodles w/o the
chicken) Definately talk to your surgeon about this, but mine told me it
was ok when I was a few weeks/months post-op. Goodluck to you!

Have you tried bean soups? I did well with split pea soup with ham
(Campbell's Chunky Soup) and 15 bean soup that I made myself. Also, baked
beans made with Splenda. Cottage cheese and yougurt are good sources also.

Have you been scoped? How does water taste? I'm wondering if you have a
slight stricture. Or even a marginal ulcer, since things WERE workign and
now are not. While you're waiting, it's not altogether bad to get protein
from shakes, veggies from vegies, and your other things from nuts, seeds
& legumes. You dont' really need dairy, so that's a no guilt thing,
too. Presumably you are well covered with your vites, and your protein.
But of course, your problem needs to be addressed medically. And not
brushed aside
