Question:
Does shrimp cocktail sauce make anyone dump?
I am only one week post op and shrimp is not on my "list" for another five weeks or so, but I wondered how anyone has handled the shrimp cocktail sauce? I love boiled shrimp, but I love the cocktail sauce too, but have looked at a few different bottles and noticed that sugar or high fructose is usually the third ingredient or so. Any experience with this would be much appreciated. Thanks! — Heidi S. (posted on December 23, 2002)

Mmmmmmmmmm, I "love" shrimp cocktail!!!! I am 5 weeks out and
have not had any as of yet, but it won't be very long, so when I do, I will
come back and tell you if it made me sick or not...lol...but remember,
everyone's system is different. I may "dump" from the sauce, but
you may not! I make my own sauce by mixing Ketchup and Horseraddish... I
like it a bit hotter than the bottled kind, but I have never paid attention
to the sugar content..I will have to check that out for us. I will
sacrifice myself for the sake of "research" (grin) and let you
know my findings! Ha! Love and Light,

Hi there, Heidi! I am 3 months post op and just tried it a week ago. I
was very worried about the sugar content, as well. It was spicer than I
remember, but I was fine, good thing because I had tried it in the store
and would've hate to have dumped in the grocery store! Vi. open RNY

Hi there. I am 6 weeks out and I have had shrimp and cocktail sauce with no
problem, other than 1/2 pound of shrimp was way too much to buy and some
ended up going bad before I could eat it.. lol. Best of luck to you!

Hello. I love shrimp too but I had a horrible dumping episode with
cocktail sauce. I hope you do not have that same experience but it would
be wise to proceed with caution just in case. The dietician for our
program suggested that we make our own cocktail sauce. I have not tried it
yet but plan to. Best of luck to you!

I tried shrimp cocktail last weekend. It did not go down very well. I am
almost 6 months postop and I can handle most foods just fine. I think it
was the horseradish or whatever it is that gives the cocktail sauce the
'zip' that made me queazy.

I dump on anything with a lot of sugar, but making my own cocktail sauce
saved me from that. I have been eating shrimp and sauce since I was about
5 weeks out. Gook Luck!

I love the stuff. Can't get enough of it and I don't have one tiny little
problem with it. Good luck... Just test your tummy with a little bite - it
will let you know if you can handle it. Open RNY 4/29/02 -122

No problems at all with cocktail sauce! Wish I could say the same about
tarter sauce. :(

Actually it wasn't the sugar in shrimp cocktail sauce that disagreed with
me early post-op, it was the tomato base! It was close to 3 months before I
could tolerate anything with tomato. Now I love tomato soup! You eat such a
small amount, hopefully the sugar won't be an issue for you. Merry
Christmas! - Anna LAP RNY 7/3/02 -98lbs.
