Question:
Why are we not allowed to eat peanuts post op

Why is it so bad to not eat peanuts post-op, In moderation I've been eating a little here and a little there, I know the fat content is up there, but I'm barley able to eat anything of substance, ( get full too fast) then the next thing you know I've barley gotten my protein in for the day, I'm addicted to cashews, 1 onz services, (which is more then plenty) 160 calories, 14 grams of fat, 5 protiens. (other then the fat) these little small jewels, realy help me when I'm in a nitch and am hungry. I think in an average day I eat less then 30-40 grams of fat per day. Is there any other reason that I shouldn't be eating these post op ?? 2 months 1 day post op and down 56 pounds.    — tannedtigress (posted on July 25, 2002)

I don't think its such a bad thing. To help my protein levels, I eat a scoop of peanutbutter everyday which my doc told me is fine. I wouldn't worry about having the little amount you do. Another thing to try though, is soy nuts. I have soy nuts with BBQ flavor. They are jam packed with protein (12g per serving). You can either get them at a supermarket or at vitalady.com.

Nuts are FINE, and good protein. I am highly allergic and cant eat them, but lots of post ops do, its a great snack type food. Anything in moderation is the key success....

Dawn, I am 5 1/2 weeks, and I eat a few almonds a day, and eat peanut butter from time to time for protein. I don't eat many almonds because nuts have always given me a diarrhea (that has not changed). Just make sure you chew, don't overdo, and enjoy your natural protein. Good Luck!

Not allowed to eat peanuts post op??? I've never heard that one. ;) I love peanuts and for the last 20 years I've suffered acid reflux really bad after eating them. Since the WLS I can eat peanuts with no problems. And I'm sure making up for the last 20 years!

Ok, I can see the issue with the fat in nuts, but it is GOOD fat! HDL raising fat! Since we malabsorb fat, isn't it good to add a bit into our diets everyday? The meat I eat is very lean, so I'm not getting much fat there. The cheese has a different kind of fat, just like the meat! I think pistachios and cashews go down so great and taste a lot better than soy nuts do. I find I can only eat about 10 cashew halves, but it makes me feel like I ate so much just because it's ten of anything! Where did you hear you weren't supposed to eat nuts? I haven't honestly tried peanuts yet, I wasn't a big fan of them pre op. Oh, I also have noticed that my nce severely dry skin really benefits from consuming some fat in my diet. I was one of those confused high carb, low fat dieters in my pre wls life, so I rarely ate nuts. I had the worst dry skin and hair. After wls, eating nuts has really made a difference!

Nuts? Bad? Noooo. Nuts, GOOD. As everyone said, we malabsorb a good deal of fats/oils, and we need some of what nuts have to offer. I don't count the protein, but they provide some other nutrients that we CAN absorb. (don't make me get out my books!) Win/win, you know? Also, a few nuts go a LONG way toward satisfying the chew, the texture, the flavor, the head thing & the tummy thing. That's a LOT of miles out of an oz of nuts, you know?
