Question:
Did I have the right to ask my PCP to see my medical chart.....
....that he has kept on me for the past 20+ years? I am asking because I am simply curious. I would love to look through it. It is, after all, my chart. Do I have the right to ask him this? Ya know, like "Give me the chart, leave the room (him) and come back in a few minutes" kind of thing? I am 5 months post op....and really, just curious. — blank first name B. Request a copy. You might have to pay a per page charge. OR have another
doc request a copy and YOU provide the shuttle service. I did that and made
anoterh copy for myself.

Yes, you do have the right to see your medical file. Michelle has a really
good idea about having your surgeon ask your PCP for a copy. You will have
to sign a release authorizing your PCP to give a copy of your records to
the surgeon.

Michelle did exactly what I did. Had another doc ask for the records, I
transported them, stopping at a copy machine first. It's the cheapest and
easiest way to do it but if you can't, you are entitled to copies of all
your records and I highly recommend that everyone keeps a copy of all their
records.

For malpractice reasons, you cannot have 5 mins alone with your chart. You
could change information in it. However, you are entitled to a copy of
everything in your chart, including the doctor's hand written notes!!

I always read my chart while i wait for the doctor to come in...i simply
take it out of the slot as i go into the room....i do leave the door
open....she told me that it's my chart so i can look at it anytime.....

Not only did you have a right to see your chart, I got a copy of mine to
take to the consultation appointment and to help me fill out the paper work
that was required before I had to go. Good Luck!
I found a lot of useful information in it that I had forgotten about...
