Question:
2 weeks post op What can I do for left side shoulder and rib pain?
I started developing shoulder and rib pain in my left side about 2 nights ago. It has kept me from sleeping. I didn't think it was directly related to the wls but after reviewing the library just in case, I read it could be from retractors (what does that mean?) or a leak. I don't think it's a leak because I feel OK otherwise, I don't have a fever or anything. Please shead some light on what causes this, is it common, what can I take to ease the pain (the meds I was sent home on for incision pain wont touch it) and will it eventually go away? Thank you so much for any insight. I appreciate it. -Kim — KimBo36 (posted on July 29, 2001)

First, check with your doc to rule out a variety of issues. Once those are
resolved, see your chiropractor. I went to mine 2 weeks post op, my whole
spine was out of alignment! About 3 trips got me back to normal:
chiropractor said that surgery is none to gentle, and since you are out
cold, you don't realise how much you get bumped and thumped around.
I also used moist heat on my really sore spots, in fact started that in
hospital about 3 days post op. A hot shower before bed will relax you, as
will taking your calcium supplement in the evening. I was lucky enough to
have a heating, vibrating recliner, which was heaven when I got home, in
lieu of that, use lots of pillows and sit on a recline in bed as well as
during the day.
Oh, one more hit, walk, walk, walk. As often as you can stand, but don't
exhaust yourself in the heat. 3 walks of 10 minutes each is equal to one
30 minute walk according to my MD and chiropractor.

I went to ER last week with left shoulder pain and a pain in my ribs, When
I called my surgon he said it was from the air from the surgery, but it
turned out to be a ruptured spleen. I lost 7 pints of blood and was almost
dead before surgery to remove my spleen. Take Care See A Doctor!
