Question:
I have noticed when I take pain killers like Aleve I have black tarry stools...

The bottle states that it can cause stomach bleeding which is what I believe is causing the black stools. I am lead to believe since it is printed right on the bottle that this is some what common. Is it? Can this cause a problem in a small post op pouch? Is this something I should worry about? I do know it's only after I take pain killers...and I only do that very conservatively. It only lasts a day or two and things are back to normal. I noticed this the last three times I've taken pain killers over the last two months...so I don't know if this has always happened to me. (I will be avoiding otc pain killers from here out) Since looking into this surgery I have become much more aware of my body and these sorts of things. I'm about a month away from surgery and I will be discussing it with my surgeon..but any input I could get would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!    — KimBo36 (posted on June 17, 2001)

I was told specifically by my surgeon that after my surgery (7/16) I will have to avoid things like asprin, Aleve, Advil, motrin and prescription anti-inflammatories. If I were you, I wouldn't take them at all.

I just wanted to confirm what Dee said...any ibuprofin or anti-inflammatories (as well as aspirin), with the exception of Celebrex or Vioxx are off limits to us for the rest of our lives because they promote stomach ulcers, which could in turn break down the staple line and the stoma. You need to stick to Tylenol, or if you need something stronger, usually Vicodin is indicated. I'm sorry your doctor neglected to tell you this. Good luck and God Bless.
