Question:
Does Sugar Alcohol cause dumping ?

I was at Harry & David shopping and they have a sugar free section with lots of sugar free products. However, in closer examination of the Nutrition Fact Label, I found "Sugar Alcohol". Has anyone try any sugar free products with sugar alcohol and not had a problem with it. Thanks    — [Anonymous] (posted on December 13, 2000)

Well my nutrionists says that a lot of sugar alcohol can be dangerous as far as dumping. So far, I haven't had a problem with it. I have had something with as much as 29g of sugar alcohol in it. I didn't dump. So, far she just says to beware of them. But other than that, it doesn't bother you as bad as suger. PER MY NUTRIONISTS!!

Sugar Alcohol is not really sugar, nor is it really alcohol. In your body, it is used the same as any other carbohydrate. Since it doesn't enter the blood stream rapidly, like sugar does, it will probably not cause dumping. However, certain individuals are sensitive to sugar alcohols (sorbitol, mannitol, etc.) and will get diarrhea and gas from them. So, even if you don't get dumping, you may still get sick from eating too much of these products. In addition, you are still getting the full calories from these "sugar free" products as if you ate regular sugar products. Some of the sugar free chocolates made with sugar alcohols are very tasty, and barely different from regular chocolates, but be careful how much you eat, especially in one sitting.

I am 13 days post op and am allowed to have sugar-free fudgsicles which have sugar alcohol in them. So far I haven't dumped and they are delicious!
