Question:
Slow to non loser pre op
have any of you had this experience? I had surgery (tt) for med. reasons 2 years ago. I had been able to lose 60 or so lbs on atkins and after surgery have not been able to lose ONE pound in 2 years! not for lack of trying! do you think I will lose as quickly as others with wls, or will my screwed up metabolism and inability to lose follow me through the surgery? thanks and bless you all! — darci T. I have the same concerns. I have lost and gained the same 20 pounds since
last October. I am very worried that after surgery, I will lose 20 pounds
again and never lose another ounce.

Before surgery that's what I thought too. Ive always been overweight but
when I had my kids that's when my metabolism really went down the tubes!
Every diet I tried after that I would maybe lose 10 lbs at the most! And
it would take me about 4-5 months just to lose that! Then of course, I
would gain it back and gain some more on top of that. Iam now 3 months
postop and have lost 60 lbs! I feel great! For me it's a matter of
keeping up on my protein requirements and exercising (walking and going to
Curves 3 times a week). Have no fear! As long as you follow your doc's
instructions after your surgery, you'll lose weight! Good Luck!

I am like you and the other posters. Before surgery it would take me
months to lose 10 lbs on a plan like Atkins where other people were losing
10 lbs in a couple of weeks. I would get discouraged and go off whatever
plan I was on and then I would gain those 10 lbs back in a matter of days.
I had good success with Body for Life in the spring of 2001 but not like
other people had in 12 weeks. Then I was sidelined with a raging inner ear
infection and after only a couple of weeks my body did not look like it had
gone through serious weight training and healthy eating for 12 weeks. In
no time at all I was BIGGER than I had been at the beginning of the 12
weeks. I was so discouraged I just kept eating and stopped working out at
that point, resigned to grow huge and die that way. When surgery was
mentioned to me, first by a friend and then by a health care worker in the
same week, I hoped it was the answer but feared I would be the one to lose
10 or 20 lbs and gain it back. I'm still a slow loser and am not
exercising (due to car accident injuries) but have lost 40 lbs in 15 weeks
and my BMI is down to 32. Others might think this is NOTHING but for me,
it's incredible. You might fall into the category of slow loser after
surgery (many of us are in that category) but you will lose. It's not like
before.
