Question:
Surgeon requires a mammogram before beeing considered for surgery?
I have not met my surgeon yet--this is being delayed because for some reason he is requesting a mammogram. I have read other profiles and etc.. I have no history of problems in this area. He hasn't even seen my medical records yet--only the paperwork first sent in. I am anxious to get a surgery date and can't have a mammogram until February 26, 2003. Then and only then can an appointment be scheduled to meet the surgeon. I'm frustrated in Sacramento. I began this process in June 2002. — Carol C. (posted on December 7, 2002)

Relax some surgeons do this as a normal health screening, if your over 40
its likely a good idea in any case. Just like a chest x ray, gall bladder
ultrasound, psych consult and others lots of tests are used to see were
otherwise healthy. I applaud surgeons who do such testing. It just means
they are looking after the whole person.

I really can't agree with your surgeon.....why would he/she need to be
checking out areas at this time that have nothing to do with your stomach?
I would find another surgeon myself.
I had my gallbadder out already so there was no need to check that. Other
than the gallbladder I needed an upper GI, thyroid check, letter from my
primary doctor saying why she thought I needed the surgery and an
evaluation from a shrink. Many surgeons have asked for more from patients
but I just don't understand the breast issue. Good luck.

I agree with Bob. My surgeon requires a pap smear on all females and mammo
on all 40+. Many questioned this requirement until he introduced one of
his patients at a support group meeting. She was found to have some kind
of reproductive cancer and he wouldn't do surgery until all was resolved.
He looks out for his patients, and I really admire his dedication to his
patients. She had to wait longer for her surgery, but thankful that she
was screened.
If you have to go through chemo, your body needs the complete nutrition for
strength in healing. Early post-WLS is not the time for that if something
is found. Better to be dealt with before WLS. Sounds like you have a
great surgeon. I say stick with him. He cares more about his patients
than 'just another patient to make an extra dollar'.

Sounds like you have chosen a surgeon who cares about your health! Good
for you! No one should be haivng WLS if they have other health
complications such as cancer, etc. Think of it as part of an overall
health analysis!

Mine did too. Why can't you get it done before February? If you have to go
to a certain place or pay a penalty it may be worth paying the extra money
for faster service elsewhere.
