I went on birth control pills about 1 week after surgery by my surgeons request. I think because they are so small it should be ok. I have since stopped taking them due to emotional issues. I wouldnt have had to worry about birth control because I was such a miserable person to be around while on them that my husband probally couldnt have taken it much longer! My surgeon is not happy with my decision to go off of them and I am supposed to be looking into alternative methods. I honestly would not mind getting pregnant. I have been married for 5 years and was trying to (no success because of my weight) about 2 years ago. That is the main reason of having this surgery. Mine was on January 24, 2002 and I have lost about 80 pounds.

My surgeon had me wait until the beginning date of my next set of pills (around 3 weeks). By the way, my surgeon told me that our hormones are regulated through the fat in our bodies and after surgery our hormones go out of whack as we lose weight. She said that in order for me not to get pregnant, that I would not only need to be on the pill but I also need to use another form of contraception (preferably condoms) for a YEAR until my hormones are regular again. So like a good little doobie I've been taking the pill and using condoms. I just found out a few days ago that the non-latex condoms we've been using for the past 4 months have not been proven to prevent pregnancy. Talk about "Oh Sh*%!!!" A quick trip to the local liquor store fixed that up real quick! heh heh Anyway, I would love to be a mother some day...just not yet. Good luck to you. :o)

In preparation for my surgery in 10 days, I asked my dr. to put me on the new birth control patch. It came out just in time for me. One thing I'd read from others posting on this site is that there may be some trouble with the stomach absorbing the pills. I didn't want to take any chances, and my hubby just doesn't seem to get much pleasure if we use condoms. The b/c patch is the perfect solution for us. Good luck as you make your decisions
