How long after surgery can I go on birth control pills?

I am 3 1/2 weeks post-op and I was wondering how soon after surgery can I go on birth control pills? I heard how with rapid weight loss that you become very fertile. I never been on birth contol pills before so thats why I am asking. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!
