Question:
Why am I always sooooo hungry?
Hi folks. I am following all of the rules as far as I can tell. I am almost 3 months post op transected open rny. I supposedly have a 1/2 oz pouch. I am not drinking with my meals, I am getting in my 64oz+ water a day, I eat protein first...I wait 1 hr before drinking (even though my surgeon says 1/2 hr is sufficient) yet I can EASILY eat 1 cup of food at a meal at this point. I keep reading over and over about people at my point eating only 1/2 c and feeling content. WHY AREN'T I?? 1 or 2 hrs after I eat I'm hungry again. I am not craving things like I used and it's not a compulsive dissorder either. I am HUNGRY....other people can hear my stomach growl. Even though, I'm told my stomach isn't supposed to growl anymore?? I get weak and shakey until I stuff something in my mouth. I am getting in about 1200 cal average a day...seems way too much to me. What is wrong with me? Any insight would be appreciated. I'm really wishing I had a BPD/DS at this point. — KimBo36 (posted on October 16, 2001)

Maybe you need to take a closer look at what you're eating.
We all know that the initial size of our pouch will stretch
post op. this is normal. It is ok to feel hungry but it
sounds like your blood sugar is falling to fast, did you say
after 2 hours you feel shaky and weak? Protein energy lasts
lots longer than sugar/carb energy so if you think you're
eating the right things, you may contact your doctor about
your weakness/shakiness.

Maybe you are eating too many carbs. I know that I have to limit my
carb consumption to 60 grams a day....spread out over my three meals.
Any more than that and I become an eating machine.

I read your personal page. WOW! You have really been through the wringer.
But you are down 53 lbs in 3 months so that is good. I have heard one
possible reason for this is tht RNY severs the vagus nerve so there is no
feeling of satiety after eating. This doen'st affect everyone, but some. Or
perhaps your stoma is stretched so that the food is sliding through too
fast. I am pre-op and going for DS so am not an expert on RNY! Another
possiblity is the diet sodas. First of all, aren't you supposed to avoid
carbonated drinks, unless they go flat first? Second, fake sugars can have
a similar effect to real sugar, causing cravings. I'd go for the water,
maybe with a squirt of lemon or lime juice for flavor. Good luck to you
Kimberly. After everything you've been through you sure deserve success
with this!
