Question:
What cereal is low in sugar but high in fiber?
I've always liked the high sugar cereals but now I can't tolerate them. I tried Wegmans Raisin Brand and it was awful! I'm always constipated so I would like something high fiber. I thought about Rice Krispies or Special K, but I'm not sure they are high in fiber. A dietitian recommended Kashia but that tasted terrible (I tried two different types of Kashia too). Anyone have any good cereals to suggest? I miss cereal. Thanks. — Danmark (posted on August 22, 2001)

I love Wheaties Energy Crunch (it's new and is packaged in the silver box).
It's made with whole grain wheat, has 3g of fat, 13g of sugar, 6g of
protein. It's delicious. I hated cold cereal all of my life until I had WLS
and tried this cereal. I have it often as an evening snack because I like
to keep my breakfast high protein and low carb. It keeps things moving
right along if you know what I mean.

I like the Shredded Wheat and even Grape Nuts. Sorry, I don't know about
the Carbs and all. I'm not actually sure on the sugar of the grape nuts as
I'm a Ds and while I monitor it in most things I don't in that. Plain
Shredded Wheat is virtually nothing if I'm not mistaken. I don't have any
on hand to check the labels-need to food shop!
Best wishes

Have you tried the Kashi Go Lean CRUNCH? It's a new one. Higher in sugar
than the other Kashi cereals, but has a lot of fiber.. somewhere between 7
and 9 grams per serving. It's very tasty.. reminds me of Golden Crisp
(which used to be called Super Sugar Crisp when I was a kid and no one
cared about sugar!!). Alternatively, you could add some ground flaxseed to
your diet for the fiber and essential fatty acids. Sprinkle it on top of
your Rice Krispies (which have almost NO fiber) or other cereal, or on top
of yogurt or toss into a protein shake. It has a slightly nutty flavor and
is sort of tasty when mixed into another food. You do have to grind the
seeds however, or your body cannot digest them; just toss them in the
blender or food processor and give em a couple of whirls. Use about
teaspoon of ground seeds at a time.

I sprinkle Allbran with extra fiber on my fat free no added sugar and
cottage cheese mix (it tastes better than it sounds) every morning. A
couple of tablespoons and about a half cup total food for breakfast
everyday. It keeps me full for a long time and helps things keep regular.
