Question:
Can't seem to drink enough and having some weird jaw noises.
I am 15 days Post Op and have a couple questions. First, no matter how much I drink I am ALWAYS thirsty. I am drinking water constantly, and often have it by my bed at night to drink every time I wake. Yet I still feel very thirsty and it is most uncomfortable. If I drink slow or fast I still burp every time too. Will this pass? I can't imagine having to feel so thirsty all my life. Question two. Today and once a couple days ago, there is a strange nose whenever I chew anything. It sounds like opening Velcro. The sound comes from right under my ears where the jaw opens/closes. I am getting a bit concerned as I've never had this happen before. Thanks. — Danmark (posted on May 23, 2001)

One side effect of WLS I have noticed is dry mouth
My mouth was so dry for the first 4 months..
I am still thirsty alot
but its a good way to get our water intake
As for the Jaw noise I can't see how this could be related at
all to your stomach..sounds like TMJ to me
Ice chips are good to suck on
I am always searching for that thirst quenching drink and haven't
found it yet

I think the thirst thing will level out.. sounds like you are dedicated to
getting your water in and that is a good thing. I too think the jaw thing
may be TMJ and probably not related to your surgery but may be enhanced
because of the additional chewing.

I would like to add my opinion concerning your jaw problem. It very well
could be related to your surgery. It might have been damaged when you were
intubated (on a ventilator) during the surgery and anytime following. When
they initially insert the ET tube, your jaw is thrust forward into somewhat
of an unnatural position. It does not surprise me that you are experiencing
this symptom following your surgery. If it does not improve, talk to your
surgeon. Maybe an ENT or a dentist can help you.

Are you watching your salt intake? Have you told your personal physician
about being so thirsty? Could be a sign of diabetes. Don't assume
everything is related to weight loss surgery. Be safe and get this
checked. How much are you drinking? Are you drinking 6 or 8 glasses of
water a day and still being this thirsty? I have never had a problem
drinking enough fluids but some do. Good questions, but we don't have
enough info to give you the best advice (like how far postop are you,
etc.).
