Question:
Has anyone had stomach problems even 6 mos post op? Discomfort, poor digestion, etc?
I'm 6 mos post RNY. Have lost 100lbs. I get terrible discomfort every time I eat (even a few bites). I also get nauseated a few hours later. I feel like my stomach or digestive system just arent working. I am afraid to eat for fear of the pain and can't seem to figure out whats causing this. Have had all the tests etc- they show nothing. Anyone have similar experience or suggestions? My surgeon & I are both at a loss. I would also welcome the name of an experienced Gastroenterologist in the NYC area who may be able to help. — [Anonymous] (posted on November 28, 2000)

I had my lap RNY 8 months ago and still experience occasional discomfort,
nausea and rapid heartrate after some meals or certain foods. Fortunately
it's not severe and doesn't last long, but I've found that it happens when
I have "forgotten" and eat too fast or take bites that are too
big. Like many RNY patients, I have identified a couple of food items that
I apparently will just never tolerate...pork and eggs...and those symptoms
occur whenever I test my ability to eat those foods. You might try going
back to six small meals/day, or pureed/finely chopped foods for awhile and
see if that makes a difference. My surgeon also keeps some of his patients
on Prilosec or Prevacid (drugs that reduce irritation in the stomach)
indefinitely if they're having problems similar to this. I think that
these symptoms happen to most of us from time to time, but I'm sorry that
you've had so much trouble. Best wishes!

I would make absolutely sure by getting a second opinion that you do not
have a bowel obstruction or something. If it happens everytime you eat no
matter what you eat that sounds like there's something blocking the food
from being digested properly. I to have pain if I eat to fast but your
sounds like more of a digestion problem. Sometimes scar tissue can wrap
itself around your small intestines to create these problems so just make
sure you have been checked out thoroughly, using whatever tests YOU feel
are necessary. Good luck.

I have the same problem. I have been through UGI's and ultrasounds and
endoscopes, they all show nothing. I can't eat anything soild. I am
totally miserable. I don't know how to take it anymore. If anyone can
help-please do. I wanted you to know you're not alone. I wish I could
help you. This is really a living hell!
