Question:
Two weeks to long for scallops?

I bought a pound of fresh scallops a month ago and froze them right away. About two weeks ago I thawed them out and ate 1/3 of them. With the holidays I forgot they were still in the frig (thawed not frozen). To much old stuff in the frig that I did'nt see them. Anyway, I just found them today! It's been around 14-17 days (if I remember right) since they were thawed out. I was about sick to think that I could have ate them and did'nt see them all this time. Anyway, they are in zip lock bags. I was surprised that they smell ok. Yet my gut feeling is to throw them away. Does anyone know if it is safe to fry em and eat them at this point? Usually if things smell ok they are. However seems it would be taking a chance with my health. (Ahhhh! $9 a pound and I forgot they were in the frig).    — Danmark (posted on January 2, 2003)

I usually side on caution, but you could cook them up and take a test taste...they might be fine. Good Luck! Dont forget to let us now what you did.

YIKES, Daniel! Definitely thow the scallops out. I AM envious that you can eat those things. Hardly anything I eat tastes good. I eat about two bites and my head and taste buds repel. I am 1 month post op and down 60 lbs. When will things begin to be pleasurable to eat?

Daniel, I know you're probably like me and hate to throw out food (especially the particularly yummy stuff). But I'm training myself that it's okay to through stuff out when necessary, that not everything has to be a leftover. However, I am also re-training myself on portions and quantities, including freezing things as soon as I bring them home from the grocery store. I now buy more quart size freezer bags instead of gallon size. I freeze 2 boneless chops at a time for DH and I instead of 4. If I need more (for guests) then I take out more bags. Toss out those scallops and next time freeze them in several smaller bags! Even though I hate to waste I am paranoid about food poisoning. In this case, no bon appetit for you and your scallops :( - Anna LAP RNY 7/3/02 -100lbs.

Hello, These scallops are "DANGEROUS," save yourself a lot of pain, throwing up, and major diarhea, or worse. It is a bummer that they are sooooo good and very expensive though :)

Thanks to all of you for your posts. I always (except the last time) separate the pound of scallops into individual ziplock bags (8-12 in each bag) and freeze them that way. But for some reason I was in a hurry the last time so I put the whole bag up without separating them. Ahhhhh! What a waste of $9! It probally sounds like I have money to throw away but I don't buy them often. Perhaps once every three to four months. I justify paying so much as I get 3-4 meals from "each pound"... so it's about $2 a meal. (I usually wait until they are around $6 a pound, but this time I was hungry for them so I paid $9. Well I knew it would probally not be safe.... but they still smell awesome. I really fear food posioning as I've had it several times in the past (eating OTHER PEOPLES food). So far I've never had it on this side of WLS and I really fear it. So thanks everyone... the scallops are being tossed with along with many tears for my stupidity for not bagging them separtely. Live and learn. Thanks! Oh if someone knows of a good way to cook them let me know. I'm experimenting with what tastes the best. Forgive me for asking this which is off the WLS subject, but if anyone can get the channel WOR in NY... would you tape something for me. (I'll pay).
