Question:
Almost 10 months post op and swallowed a piece of gum!
I know we shouldn't chew gum. I had open RNY just about 10 months ago. I was chewing a piece of Extra gum and accidently swallowed it. This happened about 15 minutes ago. Has this ever happened to anyone else? If so, were you ok? I talked to the docs office and the nurse said if I throw up to go to the ER. I don't feel anything yet, but, what I'm worried about is how it will pass through my system. Should I still try and continue to eat throughout the day like normal? I have been drinking water to try and flush it through. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. — Marlene H. (posted on June 6, 2002)

Well I know everyone is different but I accidentally swallowed a piece of
gum (actually twice) and it didn't bother me one bit. I worried like crazy
about it but evidentally every thing worked out ! I just about flipped out
when I realized I had swallowed it. I am just more careful now. I am 6
months post-op Lap RYN.

Yep, I swallowed a piece of gum at about 6 months post-op. I'm still alive
and kicking. I now try to remember not to chew gum or at least not to
swallow it. I was chewing a stick of Wrigley's. It would have probably
had been different if it were a wad of bubble gum. Don't stress of this

I am just now 2 months and I too swallowed a piece of Extra gum!! I called
my surgeon and he said as long as I can eat and drink okay I should be
fine. If I start hurling call him.
