Question:
Will there be a problem because I haven't had a regular PCP?
I hope someone can help! I haven't had a regular PCP for years due to numerous job and address changes. I've always gone to whatever Dr. was available at the clinic I happened to go to at the time. Will this present a problem? Also, I've had severe back and knee pain for a few years but have never seen a DR. for it because I've always been told they can't do anything about it. Help! Any answers would be great. Thanks!! — [Anonymous] (posted on May 1, 2001)

I also did not have a PCP but belong to a PPO where you do not need a PCP.

I also have a PPO, but I need to have a Primary care Physician behind me on
this decision. I would be having my surgery far away and need a support Dr.
here at home to follow up with management of vitamins or sudden
emergencies. I mean, things can happen. So while I have no medical history
or regular PCP to speak of, I am just proceeding slowly through the process
with a new and
current PCP and an outline of my background. Yes, I have to show this
current Dr. that I have tried everything and that is frustrating, but it is
cautious. Yes, the current Dr. wants me to "try one more diet."
Which I am. If nothing else it will put a Dr. supervised diet on my record
for the insurance company to see. I am fortunate enough at this time to not
be suffering from the harsher comorbidities, such as needing oxygen daily
or insulin and my weight is borderline now at a 40 BMI. Maybe I am making
it harder on myself by making a PCP manditory for me, but I want to feel
safe. Besides if I CAN do it the old fashioned way, I don't have to
rearrange my innards. I am also 31, so age plays a role. If my
comorbidities, weight or age were worse or higher then I may circumvent a
PCP at home to get into the surgery pronto. It's really tricky though. Slow
and steady wins the race.
