Question:
What are the best Potein Supplements?
I'm having a Lap. RNY on March 27, 2001. I'm trying to get all of my ducks in a row and have ran into a road block. There are so many protein supplement out there, which ones are the best for Protein grams vs. Sugar & fat grams. I have found a power shake, Lean Body for Her. It has 30g of Protein and only 1g of fat. I wish it came premixed, the convenience of liquid drinks seem the way to go. I just can't find one that fits my needs. Please help. — Deloris Oneal (posted on March 1, 2001)

My nutritionist suggested Designer Protein, which can be found at a GNC or
your local health food store. These shakes are not very thick, but they do
come in three flavors. I also tried Spirutein protein powder, but it made
me sick because it has too many grams of sugar. You might not have this
problem, though, so buy two kinds and see what you can tolerate after
surgery. Good luck.

My suggestion is HMR 500. I used this stuff when I was on a medically
supervised diet program. Its very high in protein (50 grams), has only 1
gram of fat and comes in vanilla and chocolate. I take one of these shake
packets, mix it with a package of sugar free jello pudding and make about 5
3/4 cup serving puddings with it. Its also a pretty tasty shake. It is,
however, expensive, which is why I use it in puddings, rather than to drink
as a shake. When I was on the diet, I drank (or ate as puddings) five
packets per day (for a total of 520 calories - egads!). I wouldn't do it
that way again, but as a protein supplement, it was pretty tasty. However,
since I'm pre-op, I don't know how it would work after the surgery.

Wal-Mart carries Carb Solutions. They come in the powder and the pre-mixed
forms. I saw a post on the message board in the last couple of days that
said they had the 4-pak of pre-mixed bottles for under $8.00. That's a
great price...my grocery store has the same thing for over $11.00.
Also, I found a great one at my local organic foods store. It's called Keto
Shake. It comes in the powder form, but all you add is water. The flavors
are wonderful! It has 24g of protein, 0g sugar, and only 2g of carbs. It
gives be a great energy boost. Hope this helps!

In my opinion, what's most important is how they taste to YOU. A protein
mix may have the best protein & sugar amounts, but if you can't
tolerate the taste, it won't mean much. I'd suggest buying lots of small
sample size packets & seeing if you can find one you like. Also,
realize your tastes may well change after surgery. I have dozens of
packages of protein mixes I bought & now can't stand the taste of &
I'm pretty sure I'm not alone. The one I have settled on is called Health
Source soy protein shake. I buy it at Albertson's. Both the vanilla &
chocolate flavors are good....to me. I have tried drinks & bars others
LOVED & I couldn't stand them, and vice versa. I think all our tastes
are different & many of us must just use trial & error to find one
we really like & that works for us. It never hurts to start looking
early. Good luck.

I have found the best for me is the Atkins shakes. The ones in the cans.
It has over 20 grams of protein, no sugar and very low carbs. YOu can get
them at Dominicks grocery stores or from www.atkinscenter.com
They are delicious and I have one every morning.
