Question:
Post-op Diabetes, none Pre-op. Open RNY 4/10, -55 lbs and now diabetes?
Aarrgghhh!! I just got back from an appt with my PCP and he said the blood work I had done this a.m. shows elevated blood surgar. I was at 139 (not Fasting) - not real high, but I've never tested high before. (FBS in December was 102 and diabetic Hubby has tested me since then and it's never been elevated.) PCP said it could just be the stress of surgery. I go back in a few weeks for FBS and AC1 (A1C?). Anyone have this experience? Did your sugar go down to normal without treatment? Arrggghhh! I feel so good - open RNY 4/10 down 55 lbs. and now diabetes?!?!? — Diane S. (posted on July 12, 2000)

Diane: Don't panic! You said this was nonfasting labs, right? How long
before the labs did you eat? What did you have that morning, and the night
before? There are a lot of possibilities here, and Diabetes is only one of
them. Please email me if you want to talk.

Hi. Hey, don't panic. One elevated blood sugar does not a diabetic make.
Alot could depend on what and when you ate last. You said that you had
your blood drawn this morning and it was not a fasting blood
sugar...therefore, I assume, you had eaten breakfast (cereal and fruit
maybe??) sometime before you had the blood drawn. IF that is the case (and
I'm not making an a** out of "u" and "me")...your blood
sugar is probably right on target. And your pcp is right, it could be due
to the stress of surgery. I am a diabetic and my blood sugars ALWAYS run
high in the morning and I DO still take oral meds. Take a deep
breath...drink a glass of water (what else??)...and go for a walk. All of
those things will help to not only calm you, but also help to lower your
blood sugar. Continue doing what you're doing with your post-op diet and
you're one step ahead of the game to control your blood sugar levels. Let
us know how your FBS goes the next time you see your doctor. We're with
you, sweetie. Good luck and God bless. cj

Diane, Stress and sickness elevates blood surgars also. Where
you stressed or sick at the point of the blood draw. 139 is
not a bad fasting reading if you look at the big picture. I
suggest the you take the test again.
