Question:
Shunt for Pulmonary Embolism
I know this has been discussed, but don't know what to search for. Some of you have mentioned an apparatus that is inserted into your artery during WLS that filters blood clots to minimize risks of pulmonary embolisms -- what is this called? If you've had this, please respond or email me - I have several friends that would like info on this prior to their surgery. — Toni B. (posted on May 8, 2000)

Toni: That is the Greenfield Filter a/k/a Vena Cava Filter you're
talking about.. Placed in the Vena Cava prior to surgery (looks like a
mesh filter umbrella as it was described to me) to catch most blood
clots. This procedure is usually done when there is a history of
blood clots.

i was told by someone that they can put it in but it is really only for
people who are predisposed to embolisms. The filter they put in is in for
life and they do worry about infection. (it can be removed but not easily)
So why take it if you don't really need it. I asked that question because
it was a big concern of mine yet it no longer is.
