Question:
Is there anyone who has epilepsy/narcolepsy who had a RNY and can absorb their meds?
I went to the surgeons consult, and he said that I could not have an RNY, because my epilepsy and narcolepsy meds wouldn't be absorbed, and would go straight through me. He said they would, even if I crushed them. If this is true, what is the use of chewable vitamins? I have postponed my surgery to find out more about this. Does anyone take these Neuro meds, that has had a RNY, and have no problem with absorption? Thank you for your answers!! — spiritprism (posted on May 17, 2005)

I'm sure there are also liquid forms of anti-seizure meds. Kids get
epilepsy too and they've gotta take something........

I was told the exact same thing. I would speculate that the absorption or
lack of is directly related to which meds you are taking and the methood of
absorbtion of that particular med. I know that RNY is not an option for me
becuase of this. ANd after it taking over 7 years to get any level of
seizure control I am not willing to give it up. Therefore I have decided
that the only feasible form of WLS for me is DS. The malabsorption is less
than a distal RNY and I would not lose the gastric juices as well as the
pyloris which keeps things in your stomach longer. My particular meds
begin to be absorbed in the stomach. So I gotta have it.
Your surgeon may have told you this due to the type of meds you are taking
or because you were possibly a candidate for a distal RNY.
