Question:
Is it true after Bariatric Sergery we can't absorb Vitiman D?
On the news the other day, they had a report on Bariatric Surgery and not being able to absord vitiman D and our bones turning into swiss cheese! they talked about a Vitiman D that we do absorb but I didn't hear it and I can't find out any information on their wed page! is there anyone out there that knows any information on this matter and the name of the Organic Vitiman D we do absorb? if you have the name of the Vitiman please email me at: [email protected] Thanks!! — Jeri L. You can get a good supply of vitamin D by being in the sunshine for 15 - 20
minutes a day. Calcium may be another story, we may only absorb calcium
citrate not calcium carbonate so I actually take citrical plus that has the
calcium citrate, vit D and other minerals for bone building.

Actually, in reply to the other poster about getting Vit D in the sun. How
it really works is that Vit D is ACTIVATED in your body BY the sun. If you
never go outside in the sun, Vit D is worthless.

oh you just have to love the uneducated!! most of us do have some problems
absorbing some vitimans and minerals after surgery. the reason being is the
intrinsic factors that bind to them are in the lower part of our stomaches
(ie b12) that does not mean we are going to have swiss cheese bones, but it
does mean we need to be mroe careful. i find flinstones chewables at night,
and two chewable citrical in the morning and spending time in the sunshine
works wonderful for me.

Can we absorb ZERO? Not proximals. They get a little. Do they get enough?
No. Do most docs test it? No. Are many of us already deficient pre-op?
Yes. There is an article in this month's OH mag, I think. I just read it in
the last couple of days, but also might be in Beyond Change--there has been
in the past. D is a fat soluble vite and some of our fats/oils are
malabsorbed, even proximals. The best way to deliver vit D to US is in dry
form (not the little gold balls of vit D) and it is D3, that is the better
form. There are two blood tests that can (& should) be run at least
every 6 months to be sure this holds steady. A chronic vitamine D shortage
can lead to swiss cheese bones. BUT we do not have to be chronically short,
either. Dry form vit D supplements are not really expensive, but not easy
to find, either. And nope, Bob, I didn't take that personally! LOL! Good
quality calcium citrate supplements usually contain this form of D, but for
many, that's not enough. I live in WA state, so, one has to ask, WHAT sun?
I am a redhead, so, what would I be doing in the sun, if I should happen to
run across any? So, not everyone can get their D from the sun. That was
pre-op. And we need BOTH, dietary and sun, as they are not quite identical.
The dry form vit D3 does not have to say bariatric on the label, however,
as there are MANY people who benefit from its use.
