Question:
What do you post-ops eat for protein, from the mush stage, to the lifelong diet?
I have had severe cases of kidney stones for years now. I have never had surgery to get rid of them. They are small enough taht the doctors just let me pass them. EXCRUCIATING! Needless to say I am absolutely trying my best to avoid them in the future. On my do not eat list is nuts and dairy. So that rules out a lot of protein shakes, cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, etc. Where can I find a post op diet with NO DAIRY???? My surgery is in 9 days, hhhheeeellllllppppp! — Jeanne S. Ouch- I've never had Kidney stones, but I've heard they are AWFUL- Things
high in protein-non-dairy.......ANY kinds of meat
beef, chicken, pork, veal, jerky Also ANY kinds of fish/seafood-
shrimp/clams/lobster/tuna etc (I happen to like skinless canned sardines,
WICKED high in protein)....Beans/Tofu are also high in protein- Tofu has
gotten a bad rap- the stuff is pretty gross if you don't know how to cook
it, I grew up in a vegetarian family so my mother mastered the art of
cooking tofu- It really can be a nice subsitute for meat if its
cooked/seasoned right- You can also do protein bars/shakes- The only shake
I liked was Advant-Edge (bought it from Walmart) I like
detour/carbsolution/atkins/zone/balance/carbolite Bars- Also, just a
helpful hint soy milk can be a nice subsitute for milk- (also HIGH in
protein) I don't like it plain, but its nice to thicken up soups, sauces
etc...You can use it just about anywhere you would use milk. Hope this was
helpful.Cheers Kim

Actually - tofu is prolly a big no-no. It's coagulated with
calcium.

Whey protein shakes, however, should be okay. Not high in calcium, this is
the whey, left over from making cheese. The calcium is in the cheese . .
.

But you'll still need to take calcium citrate, which SHOULD NOT contribute
to your problem. But you've GOT to avoid osteoporosis. STay away from
Tums, berries, spinach, etc., also. Oxalates.

Does dairy cause kidney stones? If you are good about your water, you
should be fine, unless you are unusually prone to them. Protein shakes are
dairy free. You can make them with water.
On a given day protein wise, I eat about 4 oz of turkey (2oz at a time),
probably 2 slices of Swiss cheese, 1/2 or 1 cup of cottage cheese and then
about 4 oz protein in the evening (usually chicken, sometimes hamburger).
