Question:
Science Fair Project Ideas on WLS
My 11 yr old wants to do her first Science Fair project on my surgery. I am wondering if any others had done this or any ideas. I am Honored that she wants to do this but is it over her head and too technical..Ideas..I do not want to shoot her idea down...Thanks — nextel (posted on January 29, 2004)

An 11 year old (I'm assuming 5th grade) can probably handle the physiology
of the surgery and do a simplified analysis of how the limitations on
capacity create negative conditioning to future over-eating.

This reminded me of my oldest sons 10th grade science project. He was
trying to prove the efect of exersize on weight loss. We bought 2 hamsters
weighing the exact same thing. Two separate cages, one with a wheel one
without. He meticulously weighed the same amount of food they each ate
every day. After a month the one with the wheel was actually gaining
weight. This really blew the whole theory. Month after month the one with
the wheel continued to gain. The whole project was a total loss when the
one with the wheel had 5 babies.

I think it's an excellent project. She can draw or shape a paper-mache
(sp?) stomach and show the process. She can also talk about mal-nurtrition
and the importance of protein in the diet.
It has a lot of great possibilities!!!

Have your child go to the tutorial section of this site. It is terrific
and spells it out so well. I took my kids through it pre-op. I think that
is so great!

I am only 4 weeks post op. My 13 year old is planning to do her next
science project on the surgery. I am taking a monthly picture for her.
She even saved one of the staples from my surgery. Her science teacher
told her that since she had a test subject at home she should have a good
project.
