Question:
Three days post op and cant keep anything down

I am three days post-op and cant keep anything down. I am, of course, on a clear a liquid diet. When I take in liquids, after about 5 - 10 minutes, I get the gurgling and burping sensation, and then it all comes back up plus some. Is this normal and will it go away? HELP!    — triland (posted on January 24, 2004)

You should call your surgeon. It's possible that you have a stricture (even though it usually doesn't happen so fast, it's possible). Hope you feel better soon.

On my 3rd day postop, I was still in the hospital and got my NG tube out in the afternoon. Still on the morphine pump but less often that the first 2 days. After the NG tube was removed I was given ice chips, 1 spoon full per hour. That was my only liquid until day 5 when I was given broth and jello. Discharged from hospital on day 6. No complications. Take it easy! You're basically just out of surgery. Try ice chips for a couple of days to keep hydrated and don't worry about trying to "eat" anything for a few more days. I don't mean to be gross, but did you have a bowel movement yet?? I was really stopped up post op and the day I came home I gave back just about everything that went in, as I did the next day. You can read my profile, but the long and the short of it was that the pain meds and anesthesia slowed down my intestines and I was blocked. Nothing some colace and an enema couldn't fix. I'd give your Dr. a buzz and ask his/her advice. You will feel SO much better afterwards if this is your problem. As for a stricture, I was convinced that was my problem, but my surgeon stated that you have to heal before the scar tissue can create a stricture. He said it is just about impossible at 3 days post op. Good luck!

You need to call your surgeon and get checked for a problem. I could be something as simple as nasal drainage keeping things from going through or something else that needs attention. Better safe than sorry!

3-days Post-op I was still in the hospital because I could not keep anything down. I settled for a sip every hour at least and my doctor gave me a lemon ice. I just licked the spoon from the broths or soups. I did not have too much of a problem with the Edy's sugarless pops. Gradually, 1 oz of water - or 1 oz of protein drink - it all miracuously changes each day.
