Question:
I'm 5 days out and allowed to eat soft foods How much is to much???

My doctor let's us add soft food when we leave the hospital. Eggs, yogurt, soup, etc. Yesterday I was able to eat almost 2 scrampled eggs with cheese. I know I ate to fast and had a lump in my chest were it all stopped. How do I tell that full feeling before I almost get sick? I also ate 4 oz of cottage cheese for lunch. How much should I be eating of these soft foods? Thanks so much, Robin    — Robin W. (posted on November 22, 2003)

I wasn't allowed soft foods until a month out - I was on liquids for two weeks and pureed foods for another two. But I limit myself to one egg at a time - whether it be scrambled (best at first), fried, poached, hard-boiled or whatever. I limited myself to 2 oz of food at the beginning too and measured it out. There's a fine line between not quite full and "ohmigod, I have to go toss my cookies" full... Measuring your food is the best way to avoid crossing that line too many times in the early going...JR (open RNY 07/17/02 -201# since surgery, -214# total, 13# til goal!!!)

WOW! I couldn't get in a teaspoon of oatmeal (and this was blederized oatmeal) in that early on without it causing major pain - not just discomfort, pain! So now I'm wondering why I had this awful pain and you didn't. Hhmmmm . . . Maybe I damagaed something! How long did it take you to eat that? If you do it over an extended period of time then maybe thats okay. I was really careful not to over do it because of the pain. I agree with the previous poster in that you should measure and weigh until you get an idea of how much you can handle. Hope this helps a little. Pam

Hello. Get some dixie cups they are only 3 oz. Only eat one dixie cup full and wait 15 or 20 min. You should be full. I started only eating 1/2 a dixie cup and I was full. It is very easy to overeat but if you limit your portion it is easier to control. A few weeks out I got gladware bowls that are 4 oz.

Robin, I was allowed soft foods when I went home too. I had no problems with anything and still haven't after 8 weeks, I can eat anything I try, of course I make it things that are good for me! I would make sure you chew well and take your time but not over a half hour. If you are drinking alot with your meals it will push it through faster. Some days I could eat alot and some I couldn't, I too was worried at first but I seem to be doing fine. I don't think I can eat quite that much but I can eat quite a bit. Down -48lbs....GOOD LUCK!

Which surgery did you have? If you've got a pouch, that does seem like a lot, but if you had the DS, you SHOULD be able to eat that much. *grin*
