Question:
How or when do I get any energy back?
I had my open RNY gallbladder removal on 10/06/2003 and everything went well. Twenty four hours after I no longer needed any medication for my diabetes and high blood pressure and I have not had any major complication in which I'm happy and grateful for........But I'm so, so tired, I have no energy at all and I constantly feel like laying down to rest/sleep. I take Centrum multi vitamins, B-complex, Biotin, twice a day and B-12 once a week. My intake of Protein is around 80-90 gram everyday all together, I drink over 100 OZ of fluid in a 24 hour period. I force my self out for two daily walks (2-3 miles all together). I don't know what else to do to get some energy and I'm open for any advise. Tomorrow I will see my family physician for check up on blood pressure and blood sugar and I have an appointment to see my surgeon the 28 of this month (he is on vacation this week). Hope to get some good advise from all you wise caring people out there. Hugs and thanks — Tove Annelise H. (posted on October 21, 2003)

Tove-It sounds like you are doing everything right. Congratulations, you
are doing much more than I was at this stage-about 2 weeks out! I remember
having the same concern as you and my doc reminding me that I had just had
major surgery. I had lap surgery but it is still a major surgery. I
started to get much more energy around 5 weeks out! Good luck Lynda ME/FL

It took me unitl 5 weeks to feel really good again. Right after I started
getting in all of my protein through a powder. It made all the difference
in the world for me. Good luck!

My surgeon told me that even though I was sleeping/resting a lot those
first few weeks, my body was running a marathon trying to heal itself.
With that thought in mind I tried to give myself a break and allow myself
to rest. I too took about 5 weeks to really feel the energy returning.
You're doing great so far and you should feel so much better in another
week or two. I'm 3 months post op, down 54 lbs and running circles around
everyone I know!

It sounds like you're doing great - congrats! The exhaustion is completely
normal - I was worried about it but then it slowly disappeared and by 6-8
weeks, I was feeling a lot better and had more energy. But I was napping
nearly every day for 6-8 weeks. Relax & enjoy - you're doing great!

Hi Tove. You really ARE doing great. It's not unusual that you have little
energy. You body is healing itself from a major surgery. Give yourself a
break, don't be so hard on yourself. It takes 6 to 8 weeks to get back to
normal sometimes. You could take and extra B12 dose if you want. (I
assume you're taking a sublingual- which works best) That might help a
bit. When I have weeks now that I feel run down, I take and extra dose of
b12 and it helps a lot.

I had open RNY on 3/6/03 (almost 8 months postop) and am having problems
with iron. Your normal iron count is suppose to be between 60 and 180.
Mine is 9. I am also lacking B-12. I am always very tired. Has your
doctor checked your blood count????
Just in case this is your problem, I found a supplement at GNC called
"Iron Complete". It has Iron as well as B-12, Vitamin C, Folic
Acid and Copper. I just started this supplement on Monday and am already
starting to feel a little better.
Also, I have done some reading on the absorption of iron and have found
some information indicating that caffeine inhibits the absorption of iron
up to 91%!!!!! If iron is a problem you shouldn't drink anything with
caffeine within an hour of a meal or taking a supplement.
Hope this helps!!

Tove, you are an amazing! Please tell me your secret. I had open RNY/GB
removal on 10/1/03. I have absolutely no energy, get in about 30-40 grams
of protein and 40 ounces of water. I walk about 1.5 miles per day. I
can't seem to want to eat anything. Food is no longer appealing. I've
lost 40 pounds so far, which I think is too fast. Thank you for sharing.
You are doing wonderfully! Chin up! You are an inspiration to us all.
Please continue to let me/us know how you are progressing.
