Question:
How many grams of protein a day should we be aiming for?
Ok, ok - don't hate me because I didn't want to click through hundreds of answers to find this, because when i did the search under "protein," literally hundreds of postings came up. MY QUESTION IS - post-op, how many grams of protein should we be aiming for daily? I don't have my nutrition appointment until the 27th of June, and my surgery is the 7th of July, so I want to start researching how many grams of protein are in the foods I'm currently eating (and be more aware of what I should be intaking). What is the consensus? Thanks for all the help and support! — sweetmana (posted on June 8, 2003)

60 grams per day minimum. Of course you should ask your surgeon what
he/she requires.

Depends on what you want & what kind of surgery. The minimum for
aproximal RNY is usually considered to be 60g in supplement. Has to be more
in food to work around the malabsorption. But then if you're after max wt
loss, OR better healing OR volume, appeetitite & craving control, then
there really is not a top end limit on it, just the 30g per serving cap

During weight loss phase I did 3 to 4 protein drinks daily at a total of 90
to 120 grams per serving. At maintenance stage I do a minimum of 2 a day
for 60 grams. I do get my bloodwork checked regularly though to make sure
my levels are ok. I don't count the protein in food. Good luck and God
bless!

My nutirionist recommends 100 grams per day. I do 60 a day with Real Meals
and the rest from food. Here is a link to a list of FAQ's about protein
and gastric bypass patients.

of links to do your own research in my profile.

My dietician recommends 65-75 grams per day, but I shoot for 90-100 grams
daily.

My dietitian said the number of protein grams you need a day is based on
your weight. After my surger I was told to get at least 65-70 grams a day.
I use Isopure Low Carb Chocolate protein drink once a day with 6 oz. of
water and 6 oz. of 1% milk. The protein drink w/the milk has at least 53
grams of protein. I also eat string cheese, cottage cheese, etc.
Remember, beans and soy nuts are also good sources of protein.
