Question:
Does not being on supervised physican diet hurt chances of surgery?
Hve been over 200 pounds for atleast 6 years and over 240 for about a year. Have not really been on supervised diet due to one bad experience. Hve tried the over the counter pill with diet and exercise, Will this be a cause for non approval for surgery? — Dawn S. (posted on May 8, 2003)

It will just depend on what your insurance requires. If they require a 6
month (some require longer) Dr. supervised diet, they can (and will) deny
the surgery if you don't have it.

Get on some type of supervised diet with your pcp now-and depending on why
you quit the one diet you were on won;t look too good to the insurance
company-so get moving-good luck

Most insurance companies do require that you have been on a supervised
diet...I have seen so many people get denied because they haven't had a
supervised diet.So it's better to be safe than sorry. It can be as simple as
telling your doc that you are dieting and exercising, getting weighed once a
month and having your doc document it.

I have Anthem BCBS and I have never been on a supervised diet, never talked
to my dr. about weight (he is one of those that thinks everything is wrong
with you because you're fat, yet won't prescribe diet pills or anything
like that, didn't even consistently document my weight as it increased)...I
have never even done weight watchers. I did all those 'through the mail'
pills, patches, contraptions, and stuff, and I guess that must have been
good enough for the insurance company to approve. Kim 5 months out
