Question:
I've made up my mind. What now?

I've decided to have WLS surgery, and since I'm self pay, I'll do it in Mexico with Dr. Aguirre where it is much, much cheaper. This Dr. has done over 450 open RNY. I've spoke to people who've gone to him, and they've all spoken very highly about him. However, I don't think he requires all the mental evaluations and testing that Dr's require here. I need to know what I should do to prepare for this event. I know that I need to go to a WLS support meeting...but what else can I do? I've been reading about WLS for over 2 years.I never seem to be able to find my questions once I post them, so please Email me at [email protected] Thanks, Alisa    — Alisa Sheets (posted on February 26, 2003)

There is a doctor in Washington State that does the surgery for about $13,000 including everything - barring any complications. <p>As far as your question if the doctor does not require a lot of things I would be a little concerned. I sure hope he requires the standard medical tests - EKG, bloodwork, pulmonology function, urinalysis, pregnancy test etc. Otherwise you are being left very vulnerable in my opinion. Cost isn't everything if you don't live because of something serious that wasn't found because of basic testing not being done. It's hard to know if you are mentally ready for this change as I don't know you at all. That is where a psych eval can come in handy. If you have worked with a counselor or psychologist or psychiatrist in the past then I would get their opinion. Just try and be heads up about how you are feeling mentally post-op and don't let things get out of hand before seeking any medical attention. Post-op depression is normal from a major surgery but then add in the major change this surgery causes and it can be overwhelming at times. You may fly through with flying colors, mentally wise, so I am not saying everyone will suffer depression, but it is possible. Good Luck!
