Question:
I will be about 8 weeks out when my vacation is scheduled, will I be able to handle it?

I just got my surgery date of 2/11/2003 and have had planned a vacation out east for spring break. I will be about 8 weeks out and am worried if I will be able to make it. When we go we will be visiting alot of the historical landmark and that requires a lot of walking. Will I be able to handle this amount of walking at such a short time out? Should I post-pone this untill summer? I have a 10 year-old and a 6 year-old so it will have to be around school breaks.    — Marcy S. (posted on December 19, 2002)

Everyone is very different. Alot of it depends on how quickly you bounce back and how well you handle pain. I went to Las Vegas and walked my legs off 6 weeks after my double mastectomy and tummy tuck. I'd say really work at getting in your protein and vitamins which greatly improves your recovery and just play it by ear. Merry Christmas!

Congratulations on your date! Its on my birthday! I think you will have no problem on your vacation. At 8 weeks post op I was feeling FANTASTIC and was having no problems getting around or doing a lot of walking. And you are a few years younger than I am so that should make things even more in your favor. Best of luck to you!

I just got back from a two week vacation to Hawaii and I am 12 weeks post op. When we left I was 10 and I did just fine. My suggestion is that you start walking as soon as you can after surgery it will help your stamina tremendously. I was walking a mile and a half a day before we left so I was feeling great. The only challenge for me was the eating. I got sick a few times since I had to eat different things than I am used to. If you can try to get a fridge in your hotel room that helped me a lot. I was able to keep skim milk and some fruit in it for the times when I needed to eat. The best part is that you will weigh less which will make you feel so much better physically. You will have a great time.......no worries!!!!!!!!!! Wendi Open RNY 9/19 Down 70lbs

I was 5 weeks post-op when we took an impromptu trip to Texas. We went to Dallas and Ft. Worth and did tons of walking to see different things. I also spent a day at this huuuuge outlet mall. I just made sure to take my water with me everywhere I went. Walking wasn't an issue. At 8 weeks out you should be feeling pretty good. As far as eating, I shared with my grandma most of the time. I think as long as you make sure you keep moving after surgery.
