Question:
Insurance question (Anyone with a crystal ball?)
Hi everyone! I had my consult with a surgeon, and I am really disappointed! I knew that my BMI was going to be 40-41 and that it was close. When I got to the appointment, it turns out I am five feet, three and A HALF inches tall! And they consider the half! That means my BMI is 39! UGH! That means I am 4lbs from a BMI of 40. I am so disgusted! They are going to send it in for insurance approval, but I have a feeling Cigna is going to jump for joy at the chance to deny me. What do you think? I'm so close and it feels dishonest to try to gain 4 pounds...any ideas? — Kimberly S. (posted on December 18, 2002)

With the holidays coming up, you shouldn't have too much of a problem
gaining 4 pounds. I can't see that as being dishonest - just a fact of
life for us!! I'm like you - was just under 40 BMI, and the last few weeks
have put on a few pounds. I've never been so happy about gaining weight in
my life! Relax, enjoy the holidays, don't feel guilty, and when you've
gained the weight, ask your dr to resubmit your insurance stuff. Good
luck!

What about co-morbidities like high blood pressure, hypothyrodism or sleep
apnea. My BMI was 39 but insurance would approve with co-morbidities and
fortunately(LOL) I had all three. Have BCBS of PA and they approved first
time out. Good luck.

Pig Out and gain the 4 lbs. Just kidding. Like the others said if you
have any significant co-morbidities you should be okay. If not them enjoy
Christmas and go back and be weighed after the new year. Two can play
their game.

I "do" have a crystal ball, and from what I am seeing, you will
be gaining 6 pounds over the holidays without even trying....so don't feel
like you have cheated!! (snicker).. If you are denied the first time, do it
again!! Nothing is more important that "you"! Love and Light,
