Question:
1 wk Post Op, doc wants 8 weeks of liquid only
My surgeon wants me on an 8 week post op liquid diet. I can't do it. A lot of other WLS patients I know have never heard of it being done that way. So what do I do? I want to stick to the docs directions, but it is not sustaining me. What should I do? — AprilRebuilt (posted on November 13, 2002)

Is it a full liquid diet? If so, you can have sugar free puddings, jello,
soups, yogurt, cream of wheat, very thin oatmeal and mashed potatoes, and
protein shakes. The protein shakes will help somewhat with the need to
have "something". And of course the water you need to drink. If
your doctor oks it after about 3 weeks ask if you can try pureed foods then
add some very gradually. You need to take it slow and not rush things.
Each surgeon seems to have their own ideas on these issues and it's really
best to follow your doctor's orders if at all possible.

on full liquids I was allowed to have very mushy tuna
fish salad (tuna and mayo) on a cracker because crackers turn to absolute
mush in the stomach. I also was allowed soft scrambled eggs, fried eggs
chopped to tiny bits, eggs mushed with mayo on a cracker. Also broccoli
and cauliflower (beware may cause gas pain)cooked to mush and smashed
further - added a smidge of butter to it. Anything you can
"mash" up is pretty much ok for full liquids. Burger you can't
smash up small enough - nor can chicken unfortunately. Be creative and
when in doubt ASK your surgeon specifically "can I eat this
if..." Mine was great about that. Good luck and hang tough!

I agree with the other posters. Check with him maybe he did't make himself
clear. There are a lot of things you can have if he meant full mushy
liquids. 8 weeks of clear liq sounds crazy, I wouldnt had been able to do
that either.

Well I was on a 10 days of clear liquids. Admittedly I cheated a bit. Ate
strained prego spaghetti sauce on clearliquids the craving was so bad. But
once off clear liquids I cut or mashed everythging into pencil eraser sized
bits and chewed to death. My surgeon says there are 2 ways to puree
something in the blender or pencil eraser sized bits and chew to death.

Look most folks cheat a bit, but if your going t CHEATR
RESPONSIBLY! NO NO NO beef jerky or other hard to digest stuff. Soft easy
to eat foods in VERY SMALL quanties! Your insides need time to heal. Try
one thing at a time so you know whats OK and what you may not tolerate.
