Question:
3 1/2 weeks post-op lost only 15 pounds
I don't know if I'm doing this right or not, but i'm 3 1/2 weeks post op and have only lost 15 pounds. I'm not happy about this I thought that I would have lost more. My daily menu usually includes. 3-4oz of cheese or half a yogart in the AM, 3/4cup of chili for lunch, dinner is usually cottage cheese or some tuna or whatever we have for dinner (chewed well). In between I drink crystal light watered down. For snack I might have some crackers or jello. I really need some help with this. — Irene M. (posted on September 23, 2002)

I say hang in for 2 or 3 weeks -
If I were in your position (and this is just my way of experimenting) - I
would drink a lot of just plain water, not use cheese, try not to use milk
products. and even though it is pretty early - start thinking protein -tuna
and eggs and chicken by itself or chopped with a little light mayo and
maybe a couple of crackers or half a slice of toast and I supplemented with
whey protein shakes and also the whey protein clear drinks you buy at
health food store - no more than 35 gms each "meal" = the drinks
usually have 40 grms so you can use your own judgement. Move your body -
not strenous exercise yet - and ty not to obsess (I did and still do
some-after 9 months out. Distract yourself - even if you just take a walk
or a drive or go to the library or the mall - see a movie - whatever it
takes to not dwell on the pounds. I weigh almost every day BECAUSE I like
to - the curiosity wins out over abstaining from the scales - works for
me.
You are doing fine.

The surgeons and nutritionists at HUP suggest 5-6 small meals of 1-2 oz
each. The 3-4 oz of cheese seems a bit much at 3 1/2 weeks post-op as
does the 3/4 cup of chili (I am 9 weeks post-op and only eat 4 oz of chili
at a time). I'd go for something with protein for a snack rather than
crackers or jello. You also are probably still retaining some fluid from
all of the IVs they pumped into you while you were in the hospital.
<p>
You don't say how much protein you are getting in a day nor do you say how
much you are exercising (limited to walking at your stage)...

Give it a bit more time and you'll see the weight coming off a bit
faster...JR (open RNY 07/17 -83 pounds)

I am now 3 months out. At 3 weeks, I had lost 15 lbs and at 6 weeks, a
total of 30 lbs. I, too, wanted to lose faster, it seems as though
everyone else was. At 3 months, I am now down 48 lbs. Still not as fast
as I had hoped. I checked with my surgeon's office and was told that the
weight does come off a little more slowly when we are a little older. ( I
am 54 ) Aside from that, it also comes off more slowly for someone looking
to lose 150 lbs than for someone looking to lose 250 lbs. We must keep in
mind that the pounds gone are gone forever! When did you last diet and
lose lbs forever!?! Good luck! Just keep the losing, your new tool will
be your guide. -- Roz

I agree with some of the other posters...at 3-4 weeks, I think 3/4 c. of
chili is way too much. I would only eat 2-3 oz. of any food measured using
a 1 oz. medicine cup. I did this for the first 3 months. I also agree
that cheese or dairy period is soemthing to avoid. I have to avoid it
because I became lactose intolerant after about 2 months. Dairy causes me
to dump. Concentrate on protein in the form of baked fish, chicken or
other seafoods like shrimp. Limit carbohydrates and watch out for
artificial sweeteners like are in Crystal Light. I've found that I retain
fluid with them and they make me hungry. You didn't mention if you are
truly getting in at least 64 oz. of water...that is critical. I don't
count anyting as my water except pure water. If I slip up and don't get it
all in, I can expect to have a couple lbs appear on the scales. I'm 16
months post op and down from 252 to 117. That's 135 lbs. I still have to
watch every day what I eat and why I eat it. I eat 6 small meals a day.
Never more than about 1/2-3/4 cup of food at a time. I can only go up to
3/4 c. when the food is liquid or soft like soup. I do avoid soupy foods
for that reason. The more solid the food the longer I'm satisfied and less
likely to get hungry between meals. Hope this helps.

Hi Irene. I started with a BMI of 43 and I also had only lost 15 pounds at
3 weeks. I felt really stupid at the support groups cuz everybody had lost
more than me. But I reached my top goal at 7 months and my current weight
(130 pounds/BMI 24) at 10 months. Just because you start out slow doesn't
mean you won't get there! I do wonder about the amount you can eat. I know
everybody's different, but I STILL can't eat 3-4 oz of cheese. Do you mean
3/4 oz? If I had eaten 3-4 oz of ANYTHING at 3 weeks out I would have
tossed my (sugar free) cookies!

Hi, I just wanted to add something to this post. I had estimated 3-4oz as
being about 1/2 a cup of food. However, since i'm lacking in the
mathmatical part of the brain, I realized I was wrong. So, NO I am not
eating 3-4oz of cheese, it might be 1/2 a cup if that. Thank to all who
have posted to this question.

I was confused when I read your last post, so I got out my measuring cups
to be sure. 4 ounces equals 1/2 cup. There are 8 ounces in a cup. So if
you are eating 4 ounces of cheese, you are eating 1/2 cup of cheese.
