Question:
Has anyone out there had the surgery that has antibiotic allergies?
I have never found an antibiotic that I have not had an adverse reaction to. Mainly rashes and itching. Since I stay away from antibiotics as much as possible, I am concerned about having to take antibiotics as preventive medicine after surgery. — Laura S. (posted on April 22, 2002)

I am allergic to Penicillin and had no problems at all. Of course, they
didn't give me any antibiotics. Lap RNY 8-13-01. -126 lbs. today!

and here i thought i was the only one! lol. i wasnt given antibiotics in
the hospital but when i got home my incision was infected. the dr cultured
it for the best antibiotic to treat it with, which was levaquin. OMG! never
again! he then ordered sulphur, which i know i am not sensitive to, &
the infection started clearing up the next day. can u tolerate sulphur? i
can also tolerate zithromycin, to a degree. it gives me horrible stomach
aches & diarreah, but, the side effects go away as soon as i am done
with the course of medicine, which is 5 days.

I am allergic to penicillan. I havent had my RNY yet, but when I had my
tonsils out, I had to take a lot of antibiotics afterwards. There are
plenty of kinds to take. Hopefully, you will not need them at all.

I had open RNY in Dec 2000 and two revisions since that time. I have
multiple drug allergies and was able to have surgery and tolerate the
antibiotics that the surgeons chose during each of my three procedures.. I
dont remember the exact antibiotics now, but I didnt have any adverse
reaction .. I would suggest that you talk to the surgeon, voice your
concerns over the antibiotics and your adverse reactions in the past.. I am
sure that the surgeon will be able to prescribe an antibiotic that will
work for you.. I wish you all the luck in the world and will be praying for
you too.

Sheryl, what happened on levaquin? Someone has suggested Zithromax (I
assume is a brand name of zithromycin). I think I have taken sulphur drugs
before without problems, but it was so long ago. My toleration of
antibiotics have increased as an adult. First it was just pencillin, then
eurithimycin, tetracycline, and so on. Glad to know I am not a freak!

I'm allergic to sulfa, penicillin and erythromycin. I also have an
adhesive allergy. I didnt have any problems with the antibiotic in the
hospital but those darned steristrips just about made me crazy. I took
them off after 1 week because I was getting little blisters under them. It
made my incision slower to heal but it's starting to finally look better at
4 weeks post op.
