Question:
Can anyone give me an idea on the fat/calorie/sugar/protein ratios
that are okay in the foods we choose. I know high sugar is bad, but what is high sugar? How many calories are okay if it's a high protein food? Any of this type of guidance would be helpful. I know which foods are generally better than others, but when I look at the labels I'm just not sure. Thanks. — [Anonymous] (posted on August 27, 2001)

Our doc limited us to 6g of sugar per MEAL, all total (reading all labels),
which is not much, let me tell you. But that was for max wt loss &
maintenance. Most can tolerate a little more, but that does not make it
"safe". A little here, a little there & I found myself
wearing a quick 6# in no time at all. Came to my sense, dropped the little
bits and the 6# and got myself a refreshed sense of Sugar Fear. I still
stick to roughly the single digit per meal estimate and rarely deviate. I
do my annualblow-out of a birthday cake frosting flower, but that's about
the extent of my deviation any more. OK, if I get two chances at frosting
flowers, I'll take 'em. But I know now that being lax with sugar can cost
me what I've worked so hard to lose. I do protein drinks that fit a
certain profile per serving. Low volume (under 8 oz), mix with water, under
200 cal, less than 3g of sugars, and deliver 30g of protein, as well as
being predigested whey, glutamine enhanced, lactose free, smooth and they
need to taste decent. For my personal self, they simply have to be
chocolate, too.
