Question:
Help! I think I have a stoma block.
I'm just about 8 weeks out from my RNY and have finally been able to start meats a week ago. The first day or two went fine, but since then I always throw up when I eat any type of lunch meat (chicken, turkey, roast beef). I'm eating next to nothing because of it (just milk, crackers and sliced cheese). I take small bites, chew thoroughly and eat only 3 times (well-spaced) a day. I thought the chewing might have been the problem, but I've been extra vigilant. So, I deduced that I should probably talk to my doctor about a endoscope. I saw some responses on the procedure, but can anyone else share pain level? And, will I have to take more than the one afternoon off work for this? I don't really have time left. Thanks in advance! — [Anonymous] (posted on August 13, 2001)

It may not be that serious. Lunch meats are processed and not the
healthiest most natural meats. Have you tried eating a piece of grilled
chicken breast? Try the meats in their pure form, not the high fat
processed form! Good luck, let us know how it works out!

I'm 4 months out and sometimes I still have trouble digesting meats. I find
that many meats still must be cut up very small, chewed very thoroughly but
you said you're being careful about that but are you eating the meats too
fast? I find it also helps a lot when adding some liquids to the meats like
fat free gravies or chicken broth, etc. There are other more digestible
forms of protein like Boca Burgers which are very low fat and high protein
and taste very good. I like the original flavor the best. You can add some
cheese to increase the protein. Your new tummy may not be able to digest
too many meats yet and you can stop for a week or two and try to eat them
again, but when in doubt always contact your surgeon. Good luck.

Knock off the lunch meat. Make yourself some chicken breast cook it in
broth , like the anno post said there are better choices of protein out
there. Don't worry about eating next to nothing, as long as you get your
vitamin supplements and protein supps. you will be fine. I couldn't eat
beef , other than ground for a year post op. Cheese and soup are good
choices also , mild chili , and fatfree refried beans add cheese and sour
cream (lo fat) great protein.
