Question:
Since I began eating food, certain things just taste horrible.

It seems to be particularly prevalent when I eat complex foods such as macaroni and cheese or a sandwich, whereas I'm fine with crackers or a slice of cheese. I really hate it because my nutritionist gave me the okay to eat things that were some of my favorites, and now I can't even enjoy it because that taste that I loved is gone. Does anyone have this problem too? Does it ever go away?    — Tracy L. (posted on August 2, 2001)

I have the same problem. I have no idea why. I am going for my 6 week checkup on the 15th and it will be the first thing I ask. I have been forcing myself to eat because almost everything tastes terrible.

Don't think of it as a problem....it really is a blessing. It will help you lose weight faster during the "easy" period. It really is a temporary condition. Your taste buds will perk up and your appetite will increase all too soon. However, my sweet tooth never did fully return. I'm three years post-op and while I like an occassional taste of dessert, I have no desire for really gooey, yummy stuff. It's weird because, I was a real chocoholic.

Hi Tracy...I wouldn't worry about this too much..the taste buds seem to change alot,at least to me! My biggest concern was that I would still be able to drink coffee, after surgery it tasted nasty! Now it tastes ok 3 months later but I really could care less! One cup in the morning for me!!!

I was nine or ten weeks post op before I could eat anything and enjoy it... now I'm enjoying things to much again. :(

Having the same experience myself (Operation 6/13/01). About given up on coffee. Cold cuts taste foul. Decent wine tastes like gasoline and a tiny sip of beer last week gave me a painful, bloated feeling for over an hour. Strange thing is I crave sweet drinks, e.g., orange juice, ruby red grapefruit juice, even artificially sweetened tea. Avoiding the high calories, so I cut the oj 1/3 with club soda. I guess our tastes change. Something we have to live with.

I developed a yeast infection in my mouth post-op. My doctor says it because the entire gut has been re-arranged and the spleen has to learn how to refunction and control the taste bud juice.

Thank goodness, I thought I was the only one deally with this taste thing. Foods that I really enjoyed pre op that are things I can still eat without guilt, taste bad. I was hoping that this was temporary, I'm happy with everything. It's gone great but the thought of never bbeing able to enjoy the taste of anything again was depressing. I'm going to believe it will get better.
