I am Self pay and while saving I have been researching for months....I had decided on a surgeon, on the RNY LAP etc,etc,etc....then...I started looking at the BPD/DS..I need all your opinions as to why I WOULDN'T WANT THE BPD/DS..... — Debora H. (posted on August 19, 2000)

I cant think of one reason unless you have health reasons that would keep
you from it. Anyway, if you want to email me privately about self-pay
options, I will be glad to give you some info. We were self-pay for me and
my daughter.

Debora, WLS is an individual decision, so you're the one who has to decide
what's best for you. Looks like you've done your research, so all you have
left to decide is which procedure gives you the options that you can live
with for the rest of your life. I don't recommend any procedure. I chose
the RNY. It was the right decision...for ME. We're online and I don't
know you from Adam. You don't know me either. I'm also not a doctor, so I
don't give medical advice. I always get a little worried when people do so
online. If I can, I just try to point people to where the can get enough
information to make an informed decision. Nothing more. I'm sure you've
already visited the site, but there's a doctor database at
duodenalswitch.com. My only suggestion is to find a doctor (or 2) that
does both and ask him/her for the pros and cons. It's you're life to lead,
so do what's best for you. I know you'll be successful, whatever you
choose. Good luck!

Thinking........Still thinking.........Nope. Can't think of any reason.
Many people have asked me to tell them all the bad things about this
surgery. I've come up with three: temporary hair loss, may become lactose
intolerant, may have to travel to have surgery. If you would like to know
specifics from a post op, please email me or visit my <a
href="http://www.mywls.com">Home Page</a>. Good luck to
you!

Deborah - GOOD QUESTION - I'm at the same stage as you, still researching.
I had pretty much decided on the RNY because that's all I really read about
here. Because I had the JIB and reversal 20+ years ago, I am considered a
reversal, even though I don't have any WLS now. Because of this I'm
considered at a higher risk - thus this is the reason I'm taking the extra
time to find out which surgery is the best for me. Frankly, people on this
website who have suffered complications have said they would do the
duodenal switch if they had it to do over. I'm not sure why, but I'm
definitely interesting in finding out more details. The only problem that
I have heard of with the DS is I heard you can suffer the same problem with
flatulence (odorous) and diarrhea, which was a complication of the JIB that
I had, and I DO NOT WANT TO ever go through that part again. I would like
to hear different angles from everyone out there who could offer help on
this. I live in Cincinnati and although I had my consultation with Dr.
Champion in Atlanta, I am now hearing about Dr. McGuire in Kettering, Ohio,
who does both the DS and the RNY, and I'm thinking about talking with him.
Anybody out there who knows about him, I'd appreciate your input. Good
luck Deborah with your decision, and maybe we can e-mail privately
regarding this.

Thanks everyone for your answers...as everyone knows WE DON'T EVER WANT TO
DO THIS AGAIN....I've never eaten ALOT, just the wrong things and not
exerising etc and I have still continued to gain over all these years up to
an alarming 336lbs.. So I'm afraid that having a smaller stoumach is not
going to be enough for me...I know this is just a tool..but if I haven't
been able to control THIS
up until now then I feel I need to be drastic....so I'm trying to weigh the
pros and cons between RNY and BPD/DS.

I have a couple friends who had the bpd,one has to carry air freshener
with her every where she goes. Because the gas & her bm's smell so bad.
Her Mom had it done to, while she was living at home, with the both of them
in the same house. The house had a stench to it, I haven't noticed it since
they both aren't in the same house anymore. Another friend who had the bpd,
is also a co-worker. He warned me not to go into the bathroom, because he
was just in there. I said Oh I can handle the smell. I said I'm use to it
because of my best friend & her Mom. I went into the bathroom, shut the
door & started barfing because I couldn't handle it, after all these
years. The smell is horrible & will clear a place out quick. That was
enough to steer me to the roux en y. But my surgeon did inform me there was
a 1 in 20 chance you could have the foul smelling gas with the roux en y.

Hi Amy... I would like to interject here. The BPD and the BPD/DS
are 2 different types of surgery. There are 3 of us in my family who
have had the DS and we have had 2 out of the 3 in the house at the same
time
since June 20. Stench? Not here.
I would also like to say that shit or farts have ever smelled
very good, in my opinion. None of us ever have to carry around spray
to get rid of odors. I will not, have not, nor will I ever take a dump
in a public restroom... not even at work. If BMs were so urgent with the
DS, then I reckon I would have to use the bathroom in public, right?
Well, I am a year out and this is not an issue with me.
We do use air freshener in our bathrooms at home. This is not
a post-op thing. This is just a thing. This is something that
we have always done.
Thanks for allowing me to clear this up, at least in my experience.

I hope people dont post anonymously just to pass rumors. That woud be sad
for all of us.
<that said>
I have been around 3 post op DS'ers at a dinner, and NONE of them smelled
bad and none of them passed gas at any point. I've been to support meetings
with a ROOM full of DS post-ops, and none there smelled bad either. So
don't worry about carrying air freashner - unless you have a gas problem
BEFORE surgery. From what I've heard from everyone who has had it, and is
happy to stand up, show who they are, and voice their opinions: DS is a
golden opportunity for LONG term weight loss.

I LOVE THE LGR/DS (Longitudinal Gastric Resection/Duodenal Switch). I
would not have chosen any other type of surgery. As for the post surgical
gas: yes, I had some...found I could minimize it by not eating certain
foods, just like before surgery. And, I did have some increase when I was
about 8 weeks out and added meat back to my diet. However, this has passed
(no pun intended) and I am back to normal...much to the relief of my
co-workers. And which is worse, weighing 500 pounds or having a gas
problem for a couple of weeks. Hey, matches and candles can handle it.
So, I personally see NO down side to the DS. I am 14 weeks out and down 83
pounds. YIPPEE!!!!!

Since Kris blasted my name on an anonymous post & someone wrote that I
could possibly be spreading rumors about my friends,And the bpd/ds. I
wanted to clear up a few things. First off my friends did have the bpd/ds.
And Kris on your surgeons website, it clearly states that the ds gives
stools a foul odor in over 35% of patients. And at www.surgicallyslim.com
it says the same thing when talking about the bpd/ds. Fortunately for you
Kris, you don't experience the foul odor of bm's & flatus my friends
do. And unfortunately it's a very real thing that post op bpd/ds
experience. I was merely stating the reason I would not chose the bpd/ds. I
know the embarrassment my friends have went through!

Amy, why are you so defensive? I saw your name and I replied... thats
all. I did not blast you. But anyway, I have a pre-released medical
report that shows updated stats for the stinky shit issue. The figures are
much, much lower, down to 16%. I'll be sure to send you a copy as soon as
its published, k?
