Question:
I am right at 100 lbs overweight I would like to know if this is considered heavy eno
I am right at about 100 lbs overweight if anyone else at this over-weight amount qualified for the surgery. My BMI is between 35 and 40, depending on the day, JK. When people look at me they dont think i am that heavy, but i am 5' 2" and weigh about 215. I know that insurances will only consider if medically necessary, which involves comorbities? Is this right? and what are comorbities? I have hypoglycemia, is this considered a medically necessary condition? any help will be great!!! — [Anonymous] (posted on February 5, 2000)

I am 5'4" and 215. I am not 100 overweight, but qualify with weight
problem and co-morbids. Since you are 100 lbs. overweight - THAT FACT
ALONE qualifies you for WLS, even with no co-morbids. Hypoglycemia can be
a precurser to diabeties. It shows you have trouble with insulin control.
The doctor may find co-morbids you don't know about, also. My surgeon
found I had a hiatal hernia when he ordered a UGI barrium swallow eval
because I told him I was having heartburn. GERD is a co-morbid. Well,
anyways, I guess, I just want to say that YOU QUALIFY. For a good listing
of co-morbids search the Q&A section of this site and ender
"comorbid". You will find a lot of information explaining all
the different comorbids. When you ask for initial paper work from your
surgeon - there are usually LOTS of questions on the paperwork you turn in
about comorbids. They ask you all about your body functionings. Hope this
helps. Good Luck.

I am 5'4" and weighed 228 at preop. I have High bloodpressure, feet
problems, history of severe obesity and diabetes in family, migraines. I
found out I had a hiatal hernia and GERD this year too. I was only 100
pounds over too but had some comorbidities. I have NC BCBS insurance and
they covered without a problem. I had open RNY 1/13/00, down 21 pounds in 3
weeks. Good luck. Lou Ann

Hi, just wanted let you know that I too am 5'2" and my pre op weight
was 251 pounds. I was also one of those "healthy" fat people. I
personally didn't have the major problems like, diabetes, high blood
pressure or anything like that. But I did have feet problems, depression,
irregular menstral cycles, GERD (of which I didn't know was exacerbated by
obesity), knee problems, tendonitis, carpal tunnel. And I had no clue that
all of these problems were only made worse by my obesity. I'm sure that if
you have any one of these problems, your surgeon should be practiced enough
to incorporate them into his medical notation for the insurance company.
That way they will know that you do have obesity related problems, just not
the typical ones. Good Luck...
