Question:
Has anyone dealt with Qual Choice and bi-polar?
I have been diagnosed with bi-polar back in 1996 but have never felt I really was. But now that I'm going for surgery it is an issue. The psychologist I went to, who doesn't even know me, wrote it as part of her evaluation to the insurance company and felt I may not do well as a bariatric patient. I'm worried that I will be denied just for being so called "bi-polar". I'm going to a psychiatrist to see if he agrees with this diagnosis. — Laura A. (posted on April 16, 2003)

Get that second opinion in terms of whether or not you truly are bipolar.
If you are, it shouldn't keep you from getting the surgery - provided that
you show that you are willing to pursue treatment for it. Bipolar Affective
Disorder is basically a chemical imbalance that can be controlled with
medication... just another type of illness. Show that you are willing to
follow treatment for it, if necessary, in the same way you would follow
dr's orders regarding WLS, and I don't think any professional should have a
problem recommending you for WLS.

A psychologist does not have a medical license to give out medical
diagnosis. I work in insurance and know. You need to see a good
psychiatrist that will work with you. I've been diagnosed for years with
depression, but my shrink put in his letter that I was of sound mind and
making my decision with all my wits. That is what they want to know.
