Question:
Has Anyone Lost Down, Then Started More Exercise

with some weight lifting and gained weight. I have been lifting weights for about the last 3 weeks and walking a total of 2.5 miles each day. Now getting on the scales I have gained about 7 pounds. I am eating the same, getting all my protein and water in. I know that muscle weighs more than fat but after loosing all that weight it scares me to see the weight coming back. Personally I don't want to stop as I want to stay fit and healthy. Any suggestions on how to get keep it up but stop the weight gain and get the scales going down instead of up??? Thanks so much.    — Amy E. (posted on March 20, 2002)

Hi Amy... I hope I am decribing this right... I'll give it a try... :-) Weight lifting builds muscle... which weighs more than fat so that is why the number on the scale goes up... If you want to maintain your weight, or maybe even lose a few pounds, you may want to stick to more aerobic form of exercise and then increase the intensity at your own pace... Your determination is inspiring... :-) Take care,

Actually muscle doesn't weigh more than fat. A pound of muscle and a pound of fat both weigh a pound. However, a pound of muscle takes up less space than a pound of fat. Think of a pound of lead. You could probably hold that in one hand. Now think of a pound of popcorn. It would be a pretty big bag. Take your measurements. I'll bet you'll see that you have lost inches. Also, since it takes more calories to maintain muscle mass, it's good to build more muscle. Keeps your metabolism running higher. Keep up the good work and do take your measurements if you aren't doing so already.

Don't stop lifting!! It is the best thing you can do for yourself. Rapid weight loss = rapid muscle loss. Your body is just getting it back. It will adjust and you will be so much healthier in the long run and you will have a much better chance of maintaing your weight loss long term. Your risk of osteo problems will be decreased and you will look better too. Your body is probably trying to hold on to calories right now because you have changed the routine. It will even out. You are totally doing the right thing. Go for it!
