Question:
Is there a difference between gastric stapling and gastric bypass?
My insurance, United Healthcare, states under exclusions that gastric stapling for weight loss is not covered. It also states that weight reduction or control is not covered unless there is a diagnosis of morbid obesity. Does anyone have any more info about this exclusion? — [Anonymous] (posted on April 22, 2001)

The gastric stapling is a old obsolete procedure that was ineffective over
time. So they uderstandbly dont want to pay for it.
Bypass is much more effective in getting the weight off, and will pay for
it if your morbidly obese with a BMI over 40 or over 35 with other serious
health problems.

I have United Health Care also and had the same exclusion about treatment
for weight control unless there is a diagosis of morbid obesity. Just
wanted to let you know that there is hope for you - I was approved on the
first try within a month of submitting the paperwork and am now 8 months
post-op!
