Question:
Will I be able to stay by myself about a week after surgery?
My mom is coming to stay with me in the hospital and for a few days after I am released. Then she wants me to come stay with her for a few weeks till I get my strength back. My mom lives 6 hours away. I am very indepedent and really want to me alone. Several of my friends have offered to come stay with me. Will I be able to stay by myself with friends just a phone call away? It is not like I will have to cook or anything. — Courtney B. (posted on January 17, 2001)

Hi Courtney,
You should be fine to stay by yourself. My husband took only took one week
after my surgery off and that was plenty. The only thing I really needed
his help with was getting out of the recliner when I had to use the
bathroom. Good Luck!!!

You will certainly be able to stay by yourself. I was on my
own about 6 days after the surgery. You will be sore, but able.

YES, you can stay by yourself. I had an RNY proximal a week ago Monday
(1/8/01). Since you're very independent, it may be even better that you
stay by yourself. I am independent too and my mom wanted to stay with me
after returning home...ACK! You can rest when you want, you can fix your
own "meals." Just be sure to have everything you need before you
come home from the hospital--call surgeons office to see what food products
you will need. Also, if there is anyone who is around to take you to the
grocery store is good. I like company dropping in, but not staying with me
and I like to be in my own home/apt. when I'm healing ... otherwise I can't
heal because I feel like I have to "entertain" even if they are
family, but that's my own feeling. Good luck!

Yes, you definitely can, especially if you have help the first few days. I
had a toddler to take care of, I'm a single mom, and while it was hard, it
was do-able. I had friends check in on me and do dishes and things, or run
to the store for me, and I needed help in being driven to the dr's office,
but that was it. Good luck!

I was very sore when I got home and the pain meds made me feel a little
lightheaded and dizzy. I was very thankful
to have a roommate. Also, getting out of bed by myself
the first two days home was very difficult, again my roommate was a huge
assistance.
